The New All-American Dessert

Most people will tell you that the “All-American” dessert is apple pie. I’m here to tell you that it’s actually peach cobbler. Now, I know some people might disagree with that statement or might even report me to the people who decide on what is considered “American,” but I said it, and I’m not taking it back!

I know saying that amaretto peach cobbler is the true All-American dessert is a bold statement, but let me tell you why I believe that. Number one: fresh peaches are a superior fruit to apples. Number two: cobbler is better than pie. Peach cobbler has no bland pie crust and no flavorless filling. Nothing but a sweet, flavorful filling covered in the right amount of crispy, cakey topping is what it is!

I have always loved, loved, loved peaches, so I can easily say they are my favorite fruit, but toss them in a dish and top with some sweet cake topping, and my heart couldn’t be any happier! So, needless to say, when it comes to peaches, my favorite way to eat them is in a cobbler, and as I’ve gotten older, I have experimented with making variations of peach cobbler, from a crispier topping to a more cakey topping, to adding nuts and amaretto.

Why THIS Recipe?

Do you want to impress your friends and family at the next BBQ? How about winning the blue ribbon at the next bake sale? Well, this recipe will do both of those things! With fresh peaches, warm spices, sliced almonds, and a splash of amaretto, your peach cobbler is sure to dazzle even the toughest of judges.

The Things Inside: The Ingredients

  • Peaches – fresh is best, but frozen is a great substitute
  • Granulated Sugar – regular old white sugar
  • Brown Sugar – light brown sugar is ideal for this recipe
  • Cinnamon – find a quality ground cinnamon because you are going to use a lot
  • Nutmeg – a good ground nutmeg is best to complement the cinnamon
  • Cornstarch – any brand will do
  • Vanilla Extract – Mexican vanilla extract is a great option
  • Butter – unsalted sweet cream butter is best for this recipe
  • Amaretto – since this is a key ingredient, ensure you use a quality, top-shelf amaretto
  • Sliced Almonds – you can either slice them yourself, or save time and energy and buy them presliced
  • All-Purpose Flour – just your generic pantry staple flour is great
  • Baking Powder – any brand is grand
  • Salt – regular table salt is fine

Building The Dish: Step-By-Step Guide

  • Step 1
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F and coat a 9 x 13-inch dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  • Step 2
  • Slice your peaches and place them in a bowl. You may peel them as well, but the skin will become soft during baking.
  • Step 3
  • Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and melted butter to the peaches, then stir to coat evenly.
  • Step 4
  • Dump the peach mixture into the prepared baking dish, then drizzle the amaretto and sliced almonds over the top.
  • Step 5
  • Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for about 10 minutes to soften the peaches and thicken the sauce.
  • Step 6
  • While the peaches are baking, make the cobbler topping. Sift together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly mix in the melted butter to the mixture until it looks like a loose dough.
  • Step 7
  • Pull the peaches out of the oven, and crumble the cobbler mixture on top, then dust with more granulated sugar.
  • Step 8
  • Place the dish back in the oven, uncovered, and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Let the cobbler cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

The Perfect Pairing

Amaretto peach cobbler is a crowd pleaser all on its own, but serves well as a warm, sweet treat after a hearty stew like Old-Fashioned Goulash or Easy Taco Soup. Amaretto peach cobbler really pairs well with any meal, but you could also make it the star of the show and have it as the main dish for breakfast with a slice of Cowboy Quiche or some Savory Steak Bites. Or, if you are looking for a true All-American dessert, have it à la mode with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Have Leftovers?

This cobbler recipe makes a hefty amount, so there will be leftovers. You can keep this on the counter at room temperature in an airtight container for up to three days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. Can you freeze it? I wouldn’t recommend it. The cobbler doesn’t hold up well in the freezer, and thawing it only makes it worse, but you will most likely eat it up quickly because it is just that good. It does taste better warm, so don’t forget to reheat in the oven prior to serving!
