This recipe takes the tang of dijon mustard and the sweetness of honey and blends them in a creamy sauce coating perfectly seared chicken breasts, bringing the warmth of summer to your plate.

Summer On Your Plate

When I was a kid, I thought that mustard was one of the most disgusting foods that anyone could enjoy. It is tangy, it is yellow, and it left a strange aftertaste on my young taste buds. Who could possibly use this sorry excuse of a condiment in any setting?

Now, as a full-grown adult, I can’t wait to eat mustard. Put it on my sandwich or dip my corndog in it, and I am a happy camper. However, my favorite way to eat mustard is in a creamy sauce on top of my chicken.

When I found a recipe that gave me that mustard flavor with a hint of honey on top of a crispy chicken breast, believe me, it became part of my weekly rotation recipes. I played around with the type of mustard and the amount just to find the perfect blend, something that emulates summertime.

How I see it, warm weather brings out warm flavors, and whether it is familiar spices or hot off the grill, I like to keep my plate full of foods that scream summer. Farmer’s market finds really give each meal that summer flair I crave, along with ingredients that are inviting. August is the final hoorah of summer and is the perfect chance to bring those exciting flavors to your plate with some creamy mustard chicken.

Why THIS Recipe?

After a little bit of experimentation, I found the balance I was looking for in the sauce that is the highlight of this recipe. It is the right amount of creamy with a light taste of tang from the dijon mustard and a hint of sweetness from the honey that blankets the top of crispy chicken breasts. You couldn’t possibly ask for a better way to eat chicken.

The Things Inside: The Ingredients

  • Chicken Breasts – boneless, skinless chicken breasts are best for this recipe
  • Italian Seasoning – use your favorite brand here
  • Garlic Salt – any generic brand is great
  • Black Pepper – freshly cracked black pepper is better
  • Olive Oil – extra virgin olive oil is best for a lighter taste
  • Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter – whatever brand you prefer works well
  • Garlic Cloves – either use whole garlic cloves, then mince, or buy pre-minced garlic cloves in a jar
  • All-Purpose Flour – use your favorite pantry staple flour
  • Heavy Whipping Cream – make sure it’s full-fat
  • Chicken Broth – Swanson is a great brand to use, or opt for chicken bouillon and make your own broth
  • Dijon Mustard – Grey Poupon is the best of the best when it comes to dijon mustard
  • Honey – a local honey is best; pro tip, visit your local farmer’s market to find the right one
  • Salt – table salt will do just fine

Building The Dish: Step-By-Step Guide

  • Step 1
  • Prep the chicken! Season the chicken breasts with the italian seasoning, garlic salt, and black pepper.
  • Step 2
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Step 3
  • Let’s get cooking! Once the oil is sizzling, place the seasoned chicken breasts in the skillet and cook until they are fully cooked through and golden brown. This should take about 6 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and tent with aluminum foil to keep warm.
  • Step 4
  • Next, melt the butter in the skillet, scraping the bottom of the pan as it melts.
  • Step 5
  • Mmm! Stir in the garlic and cook for a few minutes until fragrant.
  • Step 6
  • Make the roux. Slowly whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for a few minutes.
  • Step 7
  • Gently whisk in the heavy whipping cream, chicken broth, dijon mustard, honey, salt, and black pepper until combined, and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Step 8
  • Return the chicken to the skillet and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes or until heated through, spooning the sauce over the chicken.

The Perfect Pairing

Creamy mustard chicken is best served on a bed of garlic rice. You can also serve it with a side of Homestyle Mashed Potatoes or a Fresh Summer Salad to keep it light. If a side of bread is your jam, make a loaf of Sweet Honey Cornbread or Zucchini Bread to complement this savory meal. Whip up some Amaretto Peach Cobbler for a sweet treat afterwards!

Have Leftovers?

This recipe for creamy mustard chicken is so yummy that you will be licking your plate by the end of your meal, but if you do have leftovers or are meal prepping, knowing how to store the food is crucial.

Make sure to keep the food in an airtight container and either in the refrigerator for three days or the freezer for a few months. When you are ready to eat, make sure the creamy mustard chicken is thawed before reheating, then warm it in the microwave or on the stovetop in a skillet until heated through.
