Bring along versatile clothing that works in both hot, humid climates and cooler destinations. You will never need to second-guess what to pack when planning your next vacation with clothes that come out of the suitcase wrinkle-free and can be worn for any activity.

From Hiking to Swimming to Dinner to…

Are you a chronic overpacker? Do you get overwhelmed trying to pick outfits for your vacation? I have definitely been there and done that. After coming home with a suitcase full of clothes I did not wear in Greece, and almost injuring my arm from hauling my overstuffed duffel bag around Italy, I decided it was time to refine my packing skills and fill my bag with items that could be used for practically any destination and any occasion.

With a little bit of research and intuition, I started building my stockpile of items that would ease my packing woes. I impressed myself in my most recent trip to Costa Rica with my newfound skills. Not only was I able to squeeze 10 days’ worth of outfits and some extra items into just carry-on luggage, but I also managed to find versatile items that made planning outfits a breeze.

The tropical climate of Costa Rica allowed me to wear swim tops most days with quick-drying biker shorts and water sandals. For days that required a little “fancier” attire, I found that linen pants with a quick-drying top or light-weight shirt served me well.

Although these outfits are meant for warm, humid climates, some of the pieces can be combined with others to create the perfect ensemble for any destination and activity. Take a scarf and toss it on top of a casual dress, and now you are not only warm, but you also took a casual day outfit and took it up a notch.

The Things Inside: Your Travel Ingredients

  • Tops
  • Quick-Drying T-Shirts: I believe you can never go wrong with a quick-drying t-shirt, especially in humid climates or if your vacation includes a lot of water activities.
  • Tank Tops: these are a great way to keep cool. You can dress these up or dress them down based on the occasion as well.
  • Swim Tops: whether you like a stylish bikini top or prefer a long-sleeved swim top, these can serve as a stylish top for the town while keeping you ready for any water activity you have planned.
  • Long-Sleeved Tops: a long-sleeved top is great if you are trying to avoid extra UV exposure or if you are in a cooler climate.
  • Button-Ups: I have found that button-up shirts are the most versatile top you could own. They can take you from the mountain tops, to the beach, to a dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Bottoms
  • Wrinkle-Free Pants: these pants come out of the suitcase ready to go, breathe like linen pants, and are stylish to pair with most tops for any occasion.
  • Cargo Pants: these are perfect when the morning starts a little brisk, but in the afternoon, when it heats up, you can turn your pants into shorts.
  • Quick-Drying Leggings: not only are these comfortable and ideal for days when you are on the go, but they also work well as a swimsuit cover-up.
  • Biker Shorts: ideal for active and leisure days as they provide all-day comfort and flexibility, and they dry quickly.
  • Wrinkle-Free Shorts: just like the pants, these shorts come out of your luggage wrinkle-free. They are also versatile for most activities, as they are stylish, dry quickly, and flexible.
  • Skirt: a fun patterned skirt can pair with practically any top for any activity and makes a great swim cover-up, making going from the beach to dinner a breeze.

  • Under Garments
  • Underwear: Cotton underwear is breathable and comfortable to wear on long days.
  • Bras: for the ladies, I have found that Hanes Seamless Contour Bralet has comfort that lasts all day, offers support in all the right places, and is versatile enough to wear under any top.

  • Footwear
  • Socks: Peds socks are comfortable, breathable, and don’t slip inside your shoes, making them the perfect pair to wear with your tennis shoes. Smartwool is my go-to for most highly active days, as they don’t blister your feet on long hikes and wick away moisture.
  • Tennis Shoes: I have found that Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneakers are not only comfortable for long days on my feet, but also lightweight.
  • Hiking Boots: these are optional, but if your vacation is a hiking-heavy destination, you will be grateful to have brought these along. My Columbia Women’s Hiking Boots have never let me down.
  • Dress Shoes: these shoes are comfy, yet stylish to keep you ready for the streets and any event where you need to be fancy.
  • Sandals: whether your destination involves water activities or you just want something comfortable to wear while at your accommodations, sandals give you the best comfort. I prefer Teva Hurricane Sandals for water activities and Pali Hawaiian Jandals for comfort.

  • Outer Wear
  • Rain Jacket/Poncho: rain can happen when you least expect it, so it never hurts to be prepared with one of these. And, if you get a fleece-lined rain jacket, it also keeps ya warm! Better dry than sorry.
  • Light Jacket/Coat: keep yourself warm on those chilly mornings with a light jacket or coat. Wear this on the plane to keep ya warm, or wear over a nice dress for a night out.
  • Cap: whether you are going to a sunny or a snowy location, you can never go wrong with one of these in your bag.
  • Scarf: this can be dressed up or dressed down and is a great way to keep you warm while out and about.

  • Miscellaneous
  • Dress: a light, casual dress can be worn for brunch, a casual outing, or over your swim attire.
  • Belt: no full moon sightings on any of your vacations as long as you keep this packed.

Know Before You Go

  • Weather Conditions
  • Check your destination’s weather before departing to avoid packing unnecessary items and optimize your luggage space.
  • Review Activity Requirements
  • Some activities, such as entrance to religious buildings or white water rafting, require specific clothing. Ensure you have the appropriate items with you for each activity reservation.

My Top Packing Tips

  • Bring versatile products. The whole point of this is to pack things that can be versatile. However, the reality is, not all things are that, but with some imagination, you can make things work for all activities or combine items. For example, using a long-sleeved swim top as an out-and-about top so you are ready for the water, throw a scarf on top, and you are ready for some souvenir shopping.
  • Preplan your outfits. I know this may seem like an extra step, but believe me, it has saved me a ton of time and headache when packing and getting ready for the day while abroad.
  • Use packing cubes. These make organizing your luggage a breeze and compress to give you added space in your bag.
