The Things Inside: Your Travel Ingredients
Dental Care
Toothbrush: travel toothbrushes are great since they are compact and fold up, making them sanitary as well.
Toothpaste: I typically opt for a travel-sized toothpaste because it is what works best for me. However, I know that toothpaste tablets are also a great option for saving space and are non-liquid.
Floss: whatever your preference may be, take that. However, I lean towards the Reach Flosser because it is easy to pack and gets into every nook and cranny.
Shampoo: I know my hair cannot survive without my at-home shampoo, so I take it everywhere I go in a refillable travel-size bottle.
Conditioner: the same goes for my conditioner.
Dry Shampoo: I have found Dove Advanced to be a lifesaver on vacation when I’m in a rush to get ready for a fancy dinner or racing out the door for an excursion.
Heat Protectant: if you opt to bring a hair styling tool with you, heat protectant spray is a must, but I also like to keep some handy for extra hydration on those super sunny days.
Hair Styling Tool: if you are looking to straighten, curl, or just blow-dry your hair, don’t forget to pack the tool in your luggage.
Gel/Mousse: whatever product you use to style your hair is what you should pack. Just remember the rules for liquids on airlines and minimize with refillable travel-size bottles where possible.
Hairspray: my curly hair can be a little wild and needs some taming from time-to-time, so Aussie Mega Flexible Hairspray is a must as well.
Hair Accessories: no matter the type of trip, I carry all kinds of hair accessories because you can never plan the weather. So hair ties, bobby pins, and hair clips are always in my toiletry kit.
Comb/Brush: I found out the hard way, not having a compact comb on hand, so I’m telling you that it’s best to keep one in your travel toiletry bag. That way, you don’t end up with a bird’s nest for hair. If you prefer a brush, this one folds up to fit in the tightest of spots.
Skin Care
Body Wash/Soap: I have highly sensitive skin, so hotel soaps tend to be harsh on my skin, which is why I always bring my travel-size Bath and Body Works body wash. However, I know some people prefer bar soap to save on space, especially with the liquid restrictions.
Body Lotion: again, with sensitive skin, I absolutely must bring my personal lotion from home. Another travel-size Bath and Body Works product to add to my travel toiletries bag. Pack what works best for you, but remember the rules for liquids.
Sunscreen: I am not fond of greasy sunscreen. Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer SPF 70 has been my go-to for sun coverage for years, as it doesn’t leave a sticky residue on your skin and provides great protection.
After Sun Care: we have all been there, you forgot to reapply your sunscreen, or forgot to put it on at the start of your day. The last thing you want to deal with on a vacation is a nasty sunburn, so don’t forget to pack the Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Gel, which gives soothing relief for those stinging sunburns.
Body Spray/Perfume: I cannot and will not go anywhere without some form of a “smelly good.” If I am unable to squeeze a travel-size body spray into my toiletry bag, I opt for a roll-on perfume or transfer my favorite smell into a travel-size spray bottle that is just the right size and packs the same punch.
Face Wash: after a long day full of adventure, washing your face feels magical, so make sure to toss in your favorite face wash with the rest of your items. My go-to face wash is Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water.
Cotton Rounds: I buy these things like they’re going out of style to wash my face. I also found that they can be used as a gauze if you need a little more than a Band-Aid.
Face Moisturizer: I have tried a plethora of facial moisturizers, and I have found that CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen works best for my skin and for protection against those sun rays.
Blemish Patches: not only are these small, but they are also lightweight, making them ideal to pack, because who wants to experience a breakout on vacation?
Lip Balm: chapped lips are no fun while out and about, so lip balm is a must in my book. I also aim for a lip balm that contains SPF to help protect the thinnest layer of skin. Panama Jack has fun flavors and a high SPF coverage.
Makeup Products: I am not one to get all dolled up, but I have found that keeping some concealer and foundation on hand is great to cover up any imperfections. If you are one to get all dolled up, feel free to pack your favorite makeup products. Just remember to stick to the airline rules for any liquid products and consolidate where possible.
Makeup Remover: Pond’s Vitamin Micellar Wipes are an easy toss-in-the-bag item with the hydrating power of aloe vera and vitamin B3.
First Aid
Band-Aids: I feel as though this is the most commonly overlooked item you could carry in your travel toiletry kit. Not only are they helpful if you sustain a minor injury, but they also come in handy if you are wearing shoes that cause a little bit of pain.
Ointment: my go-to for ointment is Neosporin or Bacitracin. They provide moisture with some antibiotics for a quick recovery.
Tweezers: this is a multipurpose tool, useful for your eyebrows and any first aid matter that requires
Hand Sanitizer: another common item that gets forgotten about. While traveling, you encounter all sorts of germs, so it’s crucial to stay clean where you can. Hand sanitizer is a game-changer in keeping germs at bay and is ideal to have on hand in case you need to administer first aid.
Vitamins and Medications
Pain Reliever: this is another can’t forget at home item for me. A non-negotiable. No one, and I repeat, no one wants to be in pain on a trip. Ibuprofen and Tylenol are my old faithfuls.
Motion Sickness: even if you don’t typically get motion sickness, it doesn’t hurt to carry these with you. From boats to windy roads, your body might surprise you. Dramamine is a great option since it is fast-acting and small for easy swallowing.
Anti-Diarrheal: this one may seem like an extreme thing to bring, but some cuisines might upset your stomach, and you don’t want to pay the price of not having a remedy on hand.
Antacids: Tums are reliable for after exciting food excursions and come in fun flavors.
Cold Medication: ever since I went on a Greek cruise and got grossly sick from all the cooties on board, I never go on a trip without DayQuil and NyQuil. The fact that they also come in pill form makes them easier to pack as well.
Antihistamines: new areas means new allergens, so this is an absolute can’t forget toiletry kit item for me.
Daily Medications: this will look different for every individual based on needs, so pack what is necessary for you.
Miscellaneous
Deodorant: who likes to have smelly, sweaty armpits? Not me. Deodorant is an absolute must-pack in my book. Bring what works for you, but be mindful of the airline rules.
Q-Tips: these little bad boys are another multipurpose item. They can be used to keep your ears clean, but also to clean up little wounds in a pinch.
Nail Clippers: yet another multipurpose tool. Getting a hangnail on a trip is no fun, so having nail clippers readily available is helpful. They can also be used as scissors in a time of need.
Nail File: some may think this is an unnecessary item to bring along on a vacation, but believe me, when you have a nail crisis, you will be glad you packed it.
Razor: this may seem obvious to bring along, especially if you are going to spend a lot of time in a swimsuit, but it is the most forgotten about. The main requirement for taking this in your carry-on is that the blades cannot be removed. To save on space, look into getting a foldable or travel-size razor.
Small Mirror: not all hotels are built the same, so having a mini mirror on hand, that is easily compactible to take on the go, is a great idea. This mirror is also a great option as it has magnifying capabilities and LED lights.
Eye Care: if you are a traveler who requires eye care, ensure you bring the necessary items to make your travels easier. May that be contact solution and a case or glasses cleaner and a case, don’t forget them at home.
Bug Spray: some vacations are in climates where bugs are more present, but whether it is a known buggy area or not, it doesn’t hurt to keep some bug spray or wipes on hand.
Vicks: if you are feeling congested or get a little raw under your nose, Vicks will come to your rescue.
Night Light: in my experience, some hotel rooms, especially cruise ship rooms, can be unusually dark. With this little night light, you won’t struggle to find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Poopouri/Room Spray: most people don’t like to announce when they use the restroom, so keeping some Poopouri and/or room spray in your travel toiletry kit keeps your bathroom secret a secret.
Feminine Care: the last thing you want to deal with while on vacation is blood stains, so be prepared with some panty liners and a few of your favorite pads or tampons.
Know Before You Go
Airline Rules
Whether you have traveled by airplane before or not, I have listed the rules for liquid carry-ons here as a reminder: all liquids must be 3.4 oz in size and placed in a resealable, clear quart-sized bag. If it doesn’t fit or is too big, pack it in your checked bag, use refillable containers, or leave it at home.
My Top Packing Tips
Check out what products are available at your location. Some accommodations offer toiletries in the room or have a convenience store inside or nearby. Although this option may not be for everyone, it does save space in your luggage.
Bring multipurpose products. Not all things can be multipurpose, but if you can find products that fall into this category, utilize them. Items such as nail clippers can be used for nail care and first aid.
Switch liquids for solids when possible. Now, I will admit that this is an area that I should explore more since there are a variety of products available that fall into this category. Some examples include swapping bar soap for body wash or toothpaste tablets for a tube of toothpaste.
Downsize liquids where possible. Utilize refillable travel bottles for your full-size products to avoid checking a bag and to minimize waste.
Pick the right toiletry bag. The number of toiletry bags that exist is overwhelming to say the least, so believe me when I say that I understand the fear of picking the wrong bag. I look for durability, space, and functionality. This toiletry bag offers quality in all areas and has a hook for convenience.
Take this waterproof zipper-sealed quart-sized bag for your convenience. This bag stands on its own, making it easy to pack. It also meets all of the TSA guidelines for liquid carry-on items.
Keep your medications in one place. This pill case is perfect for holding all of your medications and is compact enough that you can take it with you on any activity you embark on, and it even comes with labels.
