Transport Your Taste Buds
Imagine you have just sat down in a restaurant just off a busy street in Greece. A basket of warm pita bread is set before you, and next to it is a bowl of creamy white sauce known as tzatziki. Next thing you know, you are transported to another world where flavors dance in your mouth and blend into a beautiful symphony.
This was my experience in Athens. We had just toured the Acropolis and the museum. It was nearing 100*F that day, and we easily had over 20,000 steps. With tired feet, we strolled into a local restaurant hoping to quench our thirst. We were greeted with a bowl of cool tzatziki sauce and some warm pita bread. Hunger overtook me, reaching for what was available, I was surprised in the best way.
After my first taste of authentic Greek tzatziki sauce, I couldn’t wait to fill my belly with more. We devoured this creamy sauce every chance we got as we hopped from island to island.
Once home, I couldn’t wait to share this delicious dish with friends and family. Fresh cucumber from my dad’s garden, some leftover Greek yogurt, herbs, and some spices, and I was set. In a matter of minutes, I had recreated the beloved dish.

The Perfect Pairing
Authentic Tzatziki Sauce is a versatile dish that can pair well with a variety of foods. It brings refreshing flavors to any meal. In Greece, it is as common as water!
Some of the most typical meals it goes well with are Easy Chicken Souvlaki and Greek Gyros. Whether you serve it on the side or part of the dish, it adds some tang to the meal.
It is also the perfect dip for Traditional Greek Dolmades or Homemade Pita Bread and can make a tasty addition on top of your Zesty Greek Lemon Rice! Veggies, meatballs, salads, sandwich spread, or french fries are also great foods that could use a little tzatziki sauce love.
Have Leftovers?
If your tzatziki sauce survived the crowds, you need to know how to store it properly. It can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to four days before it starts to lose flavor and the cucumbers start to release moisture, altering the texture. Can it be frozen? No. Freezing changes the texture and causes separation when thawed.
